Yoga Apparel

Choosing the Right Apparel for Yoga and Other Outdoor Activities

Yoga is an excellent stress reliving exercise that can be done almost anywhere, without special equipment, although specific attention should be paid to your choice of yoga apparel. You can sign up for classes and practice at a yoga studio, or simply find a quiet place, free from distractions, with plenty of air and light. You’ll be using a mat or a towel when you do lying or sitting positions, and should always wear loose or stretchy clothing, like shorts, sweat clothes, or a leotard.

Getting ready for yoga

Yoga is traditionally practiced barefoot, partly for balance and also so that you can feel at on with the earth. Socks or soft shoes can be worn, however. It’s best to practice yoga on an empty stomach, or at least two hours after a meal. Many yoga aficionados drink a glass of warm water 15 minutes before they start, or eat an energy bar, fruit or a glass of juice to keep their blood sugar up during yoga.

Good yoga apparel is loose-fitting enough to allow for long leg stretches without the pants tearing. If you wear shorts, make sure that they’re snug enough to not gap and expose you during some of the more adventurous positions. Shirts ought to be tucked in, and women can wear leotards or sports bras. Whatever you choose to wear, you want to be sure that your top won’t come up over your head when doing a headstand. If you’re taking a hot or “power” yoga class, you’ll want to wear as little as possible, because you’ll heat up quickly. And don’t overlook good foot hygiene – if you choose to practice yoga barefoot, make sure you don;t have stinky feet!

Dressing for other exercise

  • Be comfortable. Shorts, sneakers and T-shirts, whatever doesn’t chafe and will protect you from sunburn.
  • When exercising outdoors, wear light-colored clothes. Apply plenty of sunscreen and, if your eyes are sensitive to bright light, wear sunglasses. Depending on the level of exertion you’re planning, you may want to try sports apparel made of special wicking material that keeps you cool and dry.
  • Choose the right shoes for your activity – for aerobics and weight training, there are light cross-trainers and walking shoes. If you’ll be running, take the time to visit a show store that specializes in athletic footwear and get fitted for a good running shoe. Specialized sports like tennis, basketball and football require specific types of shoes to minimize the chance of injury.
  • If you’ll be out exercising at night, make sure your clothes and shoes have reflective material for safety.
  • Take care and pick good socks. Either too thick or too thin, and you could get painful blisters.

Whether shopping for yoga apparel or dressing for a daily jog, comfort and practicality are the most important things to remember. If you look good, all the better – but safety and comfort are key.
