Prevent a Refrigerator Repair with Some Regular Home Maintenance

Having a refrigerator is not a luxury anymore but is nowadays more of a necessity. Almost every one who owns or rents their own home has a state of the art refrigerator that is designed for freezing and preserving their food and beverages in cool temperatures.

Refrigerators are one of the most expensive purchases that we can make for our homes. Usually in the range of $500 to $1200, refrigerators need to be maintained so that they don't break down and cause us all sorts of inconveniences.

If you want to reduce the risk of your refrigerator breaking down then follow some of our handy 'do it yourself' maintenance and care tips. If not, you might just find yourself calling the refrigerator repair man.

Firstly, to maintain an optimally functioning refrigerator you should ensure that it is located away from heat sources such as a sunny window, the range hood or any kind of heating element. Secondly, you need to ensure that you don't run frost-free refrigerators with freezer compartments in unheated areas with a surrounding air temperature below 60 F. This is because when the air temperature goes below 60° F. the compressor runs less so it only has enough power to keep the food cold but not frozen.

If you have a refrigerator that you keep in a holiday home that you only visit a few times a year, then you need to ensure that the refrigerator is cleaned, turned off and left open when not in use. Leaving the doors ajar allows the air to circulate and hence eradicates the build up of any nasty odors whilst the refrigerator is not in use.

Next you need to ensure that you only moderately fill the refrigerator and freezing components with items. If you cram it too full of products it will not be able to do its job properly. Hence, especially in frost-free models, the food can begin to dry out if it is not getting chilled or frozen properly. People can also become ill if the food is not frozen properly and then it is eaten later.

Finally, cleaning is the most important component to any well running refrigerator. You need to occasionally turn off the refrigerator and clean out all of the compartments. This means just using a warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Super hot water and chemicals are not necessary as they can damage some of the plastics.
