Ways to Get Cheap (or Cheaper) Auto Insurance

It may not seem fair, but when it comes to auto insurance rates, who you are determines whether you or not you can get cheap auto insurance. Unfortunately, automobile insurance premiums are based on a large number of factors, some of which you have no control over. Like your age – statistically, a 16-year old boy driving a souped-up sports car in Los Angeles is more likely to hit something than a 40-year-old woman driving a minivan in an Illinois suburb. The insurance companies know this, which is why teenagers rarely get cheap auto insurance.

While there are a number of things you can’t change about yourself, there are a few things you can do to keep insurance premiums as low as possible. You can’t, for example, change your age – no matter how much you might want to – and auto insurance companies know that the most accidents are caused by very young, or very old, drivers. Your gender is a factor, as well. For some reason, women are, statistically, safer driver than men. And married people are considered better risks by auto insurance companies, too, and have a better chance of scoring cheap auto insurance.

There are things you can do

On the other hand, there are a few factors that you have some control over. Auto insurance companies care where you live, for example – people living in rural communities are far less likely to have a collision or get their car stolen than those living in a big city. How you drive is important, too. Speeding tickets, running red lights, failure to yield, driving on the sidewalk through a crowd of people at a bus stop, these all affect your rates. And what you drive makes a difference – a high performance car like a Porsche or a Ferrari will be hit with higher premiums than a slower, sturdier family car, which will get cheaper auto insurance as a result.

Auto insurance companies will look at your driving history with a careful eye, and any past accident claims will be considered. You can’t change your past, but if you drive carefully and keep your record clean, you’ll pay less for insurance. And your credit rating will figure into the insurance companies’ calculations – usually, they see poor credit (or no credit) as a potential risk. Your occupation could even effect your insurance rates, as some occupations are statistically more likely to file claims.

Other factors that go into determining insurance rates are:

  • Miles driven per year
  • Distance to work
  • Occupation
  • Years of driving experience
  • Business use of the vehicle
  • Whether or not you currently have auto insurance
  • Theft protection devices (often results in discounts)
  • Multiple cars and drivers (another opportunity for discounts)

It can be stressful and more than a little confusing when you try to find affordable insurance for your car. With the entire Internet at your service, though, you can take your time, shop smart, and find cheap auto insurance that provides you with the coverage you need.
