Tax Help

Looking for Tax Help?

There's no doubt that completing income tax forms can sometimes be a frustrating and confusing experience. There are many situations that don't have simple answers, or which require unusual tax forms. Getting good tax help can make this process easier and faster. We've compiled several places where you can find tax advice for your own income tax questions.

The Internal Revenue Service is the source of all of this tax law, so you can also expect them to be a source of tax help for individuals with questions about their forms. The IRS has several ways you can contact them to ask questions.

Individual taxpayers can call a toll free tax assistance line to ask questions about their tax return. This telephone number is 1-800-829-1040. If you have tax questions about a business tax return, the telephone number is 1-800-829-4933. You can call this number between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm on weekdays, and from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturdays.

If you aren't able to get through on the phone, or it is outside the normal telephone support hours, you can send an email to the IRS Help Desk. Their email address is helpdesk@speedymail.com.

Check the IRS website. They have a section called 1040 Central that provides help, updates, and general information needed to complete and file income taxes.

The IRS maintains a web page giving answers to the most frequently asked questions. This FAQ can be found at http://www.irs.gov/faqs/index.html. This page has questions arranged into seventeen categories and then broken down further into subcategories, so it's easy to find the question you need help with and click to find the answer. You can also search by keyword.

For more high tech help resources, the IRS has a live chat feature that allows you to chat online with an IRS Help Desk expert.

If you need personal assistance or have an especially complex problem, consider visiting an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center. Staff members at these locations can provide tax help by answering questions, setting up payment plans, and explaining IRS notifications or letters. Taxpayer Assistance Centers are listed in telephone directories, or you can check online for a listing.
