Family Doctor

Is the Family Doctor Right for Me?

Having a family doctor is a tradition that has been going on for many years now. However, over the last couple of decades people have been using a family doctor less and less. This could be due in part to the fact that many people are just so busy today that they end up making appointments at the last minute and end up seeing a different doctor than they normally would. Over the past couple of years, there have actually been studies showing that people who do see family doctors may be getting much better care than those who do not.

When you use the same family doctor, over time you tend to build a pretty decent relationship with them, thus leading to better communication between doctor and patient. This can be very important when finding potential early warning signs of health problems to come. It would also make sense that you would have a better peace of mind that you are getting more personalized care when you are seeing a family doctor who knows you compared to switching to different physicians for each and every time you visit.

Often times when a person visits a different doctor, they have found that items listed within their medical history have been overlooked. This could be a potentially dangerous situation if it comes to a mis-diagnosis or improper treatment. When you have a family doctor, this person has a certain level of familiarity with you and your medical history, making it much less likely for them to miss or overlook something within your file.

The feelings of comfort and dependability tend to weigh heavily on those who fear seeing anyone besides their family doctor. Those who have had to see another physician have stated that they actually felt like more of a number than a patient. This in and out style of treatment is another reason why many people are going back to the time honored tradition of seeing a family doctor.

Just think of how comforting it is to be able to go to your family doctor and talk about any possible problems or concerns that you may have with your health. When you see a different physician, most of your appointment may end up being a full-blown conversation about your medical history before you can actually get a chance to voice your concerns. With a family doctor, they already know you and they have a good understanding of what your health is like. This is why most people feel that a family doctor is the right and only choice for them.
